TRUCK INSPECTION VR TRAINING FOR DRIVERS
bg

About

Together with PIXO VR, we developed a training program to enhance truck drivers’ daily vehicle inspection skills. The training program, optimized for the Focus 3 and Pico 3 headsets, provides an engaging and interactive environment, comprehensive training modules, random fault generation, and freeplay inspection sequence.

Partnership with PIXO VR

Our partner PIXO VR aims to bring changes to the current labor market and training approaches by popularizing Mixed Reality (MR) solutions. This fresh approach to employee training provides hands-on experience in risk-free simulated 3D environments. It applies in any industry and can be used to train a new generation of workforce and improve current employee performance.

N-iX Games started cooperation with PIXO VR back in 2018, and since then they’ve been one of our most trusted partners. As of 2024, we have delivered 11 full-cycle MR projects and co-developed over 9 more. Now a large team of Unreal and Unity programmers, game designers, artists, and producers serve as a true extension and a strong technical support of their internal team.

For this project, our task was to develop a fully immersive and interactive VR inspection training program for truck drivers.

About the project

Cargo trucks play a vital role in modern economics and logistics, but they can pose significant hazards on the road if not well-maintained. Educating truck drivers about potential risks and preventive measures are crucial, making pre- and post-trip inspections an essential part of their daily duties.

To address this need, we developed an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) training program focused on daily vehicle inspections. Our goal was to create an engaging, realistic, and interactive environment where trainees can practice and perfect their inspection techniques, ultimately leading to safer and more efficient road transport operations.

The VR training program is structured into three comprehensive modules addressing key inspection areas:

  • Lights Inspection: high and low beams, turn signals, and other essential lighting. Ensuring all lights are operational and compliant with safety standards.
  • Brakes Inspection: Outer brake systems and in-cabin brake controls. Verifying the functionality of both external brake systems and internal controls.
  • In-Vehicle Inspection: Sliding windows, first aid kit, safety belt, steering wheel, mirrors, and more. Internal cabin safety and operational checks to ensure the driver’s environment is safe and functional.

Training regimes

Each module features three distinct regimes to cater to varying levels of familiarity and competence:

  1. Control Guide: A clearly defined sequence of actions with detailed instructions and visual cues to help trainees understand each inspection step and the rationale behind it. The Control Guide includes a set of important and complex interactions that will later appear in the full scenario.
  2. Practice: Practice was a fully-fledged scenario with all the necessary components. It has a step-by-step guide, but the user has the freedom to conduct inspections in any order. Additionally, the guide can be turned off, meaning that Practice combines both the functionality of practice and tutorial modes.
  3. Evaluation: In this module, the user completes the scenario without any guidance. It includes randomized vehicle faults that the trainees have to identify, fix, and report.

Project features

  • Comprehensive Inspection Coverage: The training program is divided into two key areas: outer truck inspection and in-cabin inspection, ensuring a holistic approach to vehicle safety and maintenance.
  • Detailed and Interactive Environment: Each malfunction, damage, or technical fault is either visually recognizable through altered 3D models or detectable through physical interaction (e.g., turning a wheel, pulling a horn cord, opening doors).
  • Unique Scenarios through Random Fault Generation: The system randomly generates vehicle faults, ensuring each training session is unique and challenges trainees to apply their knowledge flexibly.
  • Freeplay Inspection Sequence: Trainees have the freedom to choose the sequence of their inspection process, promoting critical thinking and decision-making skills.
